Every year, well over 2000 students graduate from the University of Malta. This number, together with the many graduates going back to pre-war days, means that the community of alumni comprises a significant percentage of the Maltese population. Our graduates are active in every area of Maltese life and are also to be found in some of the top companies and universities in Europe, the USA and Australia. Most have maintained contact with Malta through their families. The University of Malta would like to develop and sustain this contact through the development of an officical Alumni Community.
A database is being created which will form part of SIMS, the University's student information management system. This new database will enable groups to be formed on a faculty, department, course and year basis, as well as according to special interest groups, such as alumni interested in heritage or sports or any other similar activity. Each group will have its own coordinator but all the groups will be part of the overall 'umbrella' Alumni Community.
The University of Malta will be promoting the Alumni Community and encouraging friend-raising amongst all University of Malta graduates. There are plans for benefits, privileges, services and general activities for all graduates.
The University Student Council (KSU) is very keen to be involved and has already taken steps to set up a group of former members of the KSU and of its predecessor the Student Representative Council (SRC). A gala dinner, organised a few years back, was a great success drawing some 200 members and their guests.
As part of the build-up to the launch, the University of Malta recently launched an international design competition for the design of the University’s Ph.D. and Master's gowns. Other interesting activities are planned for later in the year.
So all graduates, watch this space!
