This section holds representative species of the Maltese indigenous and endemic flora. The Mediterranean region is characterised by two seasons: 6 month of mild wet season from mid September to March, when minimum temperatures never go below freezing, followed by 6 month hot dry season. Exactly the same type of climate is found in four other regions: the Cape Region and South Africa, Western and South Western Australia, Central Chile and California.

Mediterranean vegetation is well adapted to living in a dry and hot climate.  Most growth slows down in summer and resumes when the first rains arrive.  Evergreen trees and shrubs typically have tough and leathery leaves. Some shrubs such as Euphorbia dendroides shed their leaves completely during summer to reduce water loss. These are called the summer deciduous plants. Other plants such as Urginea maritima and Pancratiom maritimum survive as underground bulbs.  The main Mediterrenean vegetational communities are:  Evergreen Woodland, Maquis, Garigue and Steppe. In Malta, the maritime influence on plants is clearly evident and many of an indigenous and endemic flora is tolerant of sea salt.

The vascular flora of the Maltese Islands includes over 1000 species, among which around 700 are native. 25 species are endemic but no family of vascular plants is strictly endemic to the Maltese Islands.
