Ritienne Gauci was appointed by the University of Malta in 2008 as a Geography lecturer at Junior College and held the post for two years before joining the Department of Geography within the Faculty of Arts in 2010. She is presently lecturing and researching mainly in Physical Geography, with a particular focus on studies of coastal processes and related landforms, erosion studies on rocky coasts, coastal boulder dynamics and related hazards, beach sediment processes, geomorphometric techniques, historical sea level changes and natural hazards. She holds research interests also in traditional cartography, with particular interest in melitensia maps and historical mapping of physical land features.

She formerly occupied a teaching post at San Anton Senior School as a Geography and Environmental Studies teacher from 1995 to 2002 and was then appointed as Head of the Humanities Department at the same school from 2002 till 2007. Between 1996 and 1998, she was also consultant on demography and socio-environmental development for the Planning Council, for the drafting the Regional Plan for the South of Malta. She also held part-time lecturing posts in Geography and Environmental Science at the following sixth forms: St Aloysius College Sixth Form (2001-2007) and St Martin’s College Sixth Form (2007-2009). In 2007, Ms Gauci was offered the post as Commission Officer for Student Affairs with the National Commission for Higher Education (NCHE). She was responsible for policies related to student access and welfare and contributed to the formulation of the ESF funded project STEPS and the setting up of the MGSS Undergraduate Scheme. She has also served as board member on the Malta Resources Authority (MRA), the Appeals Board of the Malta Qualification Recognition Information Centre (MQRIC) and STEPS Selection Board.

Ms Gauci is presently reading for a PhD in Geography with the Faculty of Science of the University of Portsmouth, UK, under the supervision of Dr Robert Inkpen, Dr Andy Gibson and Dr Malcolm Bray. Under the remit of the Geography Department, she is involved in numerous external research collaborations such as with University of Portsmouth, University of Liverpool Hope, and University of Canterbury in UK and with University of Trieste and University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in Italy.  She is the national representative on the International Association of Geomorphology (IAG), member of the British Society of Geomorphology (BSG) and fellow of the Royal Geographic Society (RGS-IBG). She is also serving as a committee member of the Malta Map Society and acts as consultant editor for the Malta Map Society Journal.
