The Department of International Relations was founded in 2001, after having run as a programme for a number of years.  It hosts students from over 15 countries, and has a large number of Erasmus agreements which facilitate student exchange with other universities Europe-wide.

Programmes offered by the Department of International Relations include the B.A. Honours track, B.A. General track, M.A. preparatory programme, M.A. and Ph.D by research, and M.A. in Humanitarian Action.  It also offers short courses for professionals wishing to upgrade their skills and a course targeting foreign diplomatic staff wishing to deepen their knowledge of the Maltese political system.  The Department also hosts a number of lectures every year by visiting international experts in the field, who contribute to the Department's public lecture series.

The course prepares students to enter the increasingly gloablised labour market and take up jobs in: the diplomatic service, government ministries, EU institutions, local and international governmental and non-governmental organisations, international institutions, media organisations, the army, large corporations, think tanks and research centres.
