The Department of Italian is concerned primarily with teaching and research in the following areas:

• Medieval, Modern and Contemporary Literature
• Italian Linguistics
• Film Studies
• Anglo-Italian Comparative Literature
• Italo-Maltese Comparative Literature with a focus on the use of Italian in Malta, Italian Literary works by Maltese authors and the Romance element in the Maltese language 

The Department offers undergraduate and postgraduate study-units to students reading for the B.A., B.A.(Hons.), B.Ed.(Hons.), B.A. Legal and Humanistic Studies, B. Communications, B.A. Theology,  B.A. European Studies, M.A. and Ph.D. degrees.
