The Department of Italian is concerned primarily with teaching and research in the following areas:

• Medieval, Modern and Contemporary Literature
• Italian Linguistics
• The use of Italian in Malta and its peculiar features
• Literary works in Italian by Maltese authors (16^th to 20^th centuries)
• Comparative Literature, especially Anglo-Italian and Italo-Maltese contacts and influences
• The Romance Element in the Maltese language
• Italian Cinema

The Department offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses to students reading for the B.A., B.A. Honours, B.Educ., B.A. Legal and Humanistic Studies, B. Comms, M.A. and Ph.D. degrees.

The Department also offers courses in the Italian language for Maltese and foreign students at beginners and intermediate levels.
