About us

The Department of Italian promotes a deep understanding of Italy through a wide variety of study-units encompassing the study of language, literature, and culture.

We focus our teaching and research on different areas such as Italian Medieval, Modern, and Contemporary Literature, Comparative Literature, Linguistics and Philology, Cinema, Language, and Popular Culture. Academic members of the Department have extensive contacts with our counterparts in Italy, Europe, and America.

Guest lecturers (ranging from distinguished academics and scholars to writers and filmmakers of international repute) are regularly invited to give lectures, seminars, and talks to both students and the general public.

Our Department has a long-standing tradition of student mobility, consolidated by Erasmus exchange programmes that give students the opportunity to enrol for study-abroad programmes in various renowned universities.

We constantly liaises with the Italian Cultural Institute in Valletta in the organisation of numerous events and activities.

We offer an English-taught M.A. in Film Studies, on part-time evening basis, in collaboration with the Malta Film Commission. This postgraduate course combines theory and practice.

Together with other Departments of the Faculty of Arts, we offer another English-taught M.A. programme in Literary Tradition and Popular Culture (both on a full-time and part-time basis).

Study-units delivered by the Department of Italian are also available to students reading the B.A. in Theology and Human Studies, the Bachelor of European Studies, and the Bachelor of Humanities.

The Department of Italian has made available to the general public a number of study-units from its course offerings. Erasmus students also travel to Malta to study within the programme on a yearly basis.
