TAQSIRA

Erbgħa mill-ħames ktibiet li qed jidhru f’din il-ġabra nqraw fil-Konferenza fuq Agius de Soldanis organizzata mid-Dipartiment tal-Malti fis-16 ta’ Mejju 2007. Id-Dipartiment organizzaha bil-ħsieb ewlieni li jixpruna lil riċerkaturi magħrufa jxandru r-riċerka tagħhom fuq de Soldanis u jħeġġeġ oħrajn biex jitfgħu ħarsithom fuqu.

F’dawn l-aħħar snin xi storiċi ewlenin tas-seklu tmintax xandru xogħlijiet friski fuq is-sehem tal-letterati Maltin tal-perijodu u kollha jaqblu li de Soldanis ħaqqu importanza ikbar milli qatt konna tajnieh. L-impenn lingwistiku tiegħu ilu apprezzat, fuq kollox bil-kontribut tal-mibki Ġużè Cassar Pullicino. Madankollu, il-figura monumentali ta’ Mikiel Anton Vassalli dellet lil de Soldanis u nħossu li attitudni żbilanċjata bħal din la hi ġusta mal-istorja u lanqas mal-iżvilupp tal-ilsien Malti.

Tabilħaqq, de Soldanis ħa kemm-l inizjattiva interessanti favur l-ilsien Malti.  Mertu partikolari tiegħu huwa li b’kitbietu offra kuntatt ġdid u ġeneruż lill-istudjużi barranin interessati fi lsienna. Il-korrispondenza tiegħu ma’ filoloġi u letterati barranin turi kemm kien irrispettat.

Aħna nittamaw li, kemm b’din il-ħarġa tal-Journal of Maltese Studies u kemm b’pubblikazzjonijiet oħra li ħerġin fis-snin li ġejjin mill-istudenti tad-Dipartiment tal-Malti, inkattru dan ir-rispett fi żmienna wkoll.

SUMMARY

Four of the five contributions which are appearing in this collection were presented at the Conference on Agius de Soldanis organised by the Department of Maltese on the 16th of May 2007. The principal aim in organising this event was to urge established scholars to publicise their research on de Soldanis and to encourage others to investigate this figure.

In recent years some important historians of the eighteenth century have published insightful works on the role played by Maltese litterati during this period and they are all in agreement that de Soldanis deserves much more importance than has ever been accorded him. Although his linguistic input has long been recognised, especially through the effort of the late Ġużè Cassar Pullicino, the monumental figure of Mikiel Anton Vassalli has overshadowed that of de Soldanis and we feel that such an unbalanced attitude is neither accurate historically nor does it do justice with the development of Maltese.

In fact de Soldanis was responsible for a number of initiatives in support of Maltese. One of his more significant merits was that through his writings a new and fruitful contact was made available to foreign scholars interested in our language. His correspondence with foreign philologists and litterati is evidence of the esteem in which he was held.

It is our hope that through this edition of the Journal of Maltese Studies as well as through other works scheduled to be published in the near future by students of the Department of Maltese, this esteem will be enhanced in our own times as well.
