COURSE OVERVIEW

The Taught MA in English has been designed with a view to provide study opportunities for students who are interested in following a Taught MA programme in English but who might not wish to commit to specialisation at this level of postgraduate studies.

The MA in English provides:

• the opportunity to all students registered on the course to study, appreciate and analyse the diversity of English Studies today,

• an excellent foundation for doctoral research in the case of students who might not yet have settled on their area of expertise,

• for professionals working in fields broadly connected to English Studies: a reliable introduction to disciplinary and subdisciplinary areas with which they may be unfamiliar but which they might need to be acquainted with in their line of work (this is in keeping also with the course’s commitment to providing opportunities for professional as well as scholarly development).

In order to allow formal opportunities for students to bring the diverse dimensions of this MA route into a properly and critically cohesive approach, students opting for this course may be encouraged to write their dissertation and/or their assignment for ENG5024 Directed Study (if appropriate) on a subject which foregrounds the affinities, correspondences, and differences across diverse areas in English Studies today.

The main aims of the programme are:

(i) to provide a Taught MA route to current and former undergraduates who, not having a wish to follow the other specialist Taught MA courses on offer, would like to follow a generalist track on a taught postgraduate platform,

(ii) to offer a flexible postgraduate study route to teachers in primary and secondary schools and in tertiary colleges whose professional development may profit from the further training and accreditation that a degree like the one proposed could provide,

(iii) to offer professionals working in diverse areas a taught postgraduate course of study conferring demonstrable, certified and high-level competence in English Studies,

(iv) to provide all students with a rigorous, reliable, comprehensive and eclectic introduction to the diversity of English Studies today,

(v) to provide a challenging and rewarding environment for postgraduate study, sustained across lectures, seminars and tutorials,

(vi) to provide further opportunities for rich intellectual debate and exchange through participation in postgraduate symposia and conferences, as already organised by the Department of English.
 
LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of the course the students will be able to:

• identify and critically relate the key interdisciplinary and intradisciplinary elements of the different foci (literature and literary cultures, linguistics, applied linguistics, English Language Studies, literary theory and cultural criticism, English and the Media, English for Special Purposes, English as a Second Language) offered by the programme,

• develop a keen sense of self-evaluation in their knowledge and use of the English language and in their thinking on English generally,

• communicate flexibly and incisively in English in professional settings,

• reflect on and analyse the use of English in diverse contexts, genres and areas of discourse,

• develop metadisciplinary awareness in relation to English Studies and the diverse approaches represented therein,

• integrate the different theories and practices of the disciplines introduced by the programme,

• delineate and mediate the convergence between disciplines,

• identify the methodologies and approaches most appropriate to discussion of any given issue within English Studies,

• assimilate and adapt theoretical models within practical analysis,

• critically examine a range of significant research studies and findings across English Studies,

• generate interdisciplinary dialogue across the different components of the programme,

• apply a range of methodologies, sub-disciplines and theoretical approaches,

• adapt methodologies to new contexts,

• develop independent learning, self-evaluation, and critical and analytical thought,

• develop professional and adaptable writing skills across the discipline and for different purposes and applications,

• develop oral presentation skills for a range of purposes,

• develop metalinguistic abilities,

• develop independent research skills and critical thinking,

• appraise the relationship between different academic, professional, literary, linguistics-based and user conceptions of language,

• handle and analyse style variation,

• undertake practice-oriented research in language,

• identify and evaluate new theoretical directions in emerging fields of study in English,

• contribute to positive and informed stances on the importance of English, in all its aspects, in Maltese contexts.
 
ADMISSION AND
PROGRESSION REQUIREMENTS
The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of one of the following qualifications:

(a) the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in the same or in a closely related area of study as the area of study applied for,
provided that applicants in possession of the Degree with Third Class Honours shall satisfy the Board that they are in possession of other qualifications, including relevant experience, obtained following the first cycle degree or

(b) the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the same or in a closely related area of study as that applied for, with an average mark of not less than 65% in that area or

(c) a degree from this or from another university which the Board considers as comparable to any of the degrees indicated in sub-paragraphs (a) and (b) above.

The Board may allow applicants possessing a degree other than those specified in sub-paragraphs (a) and (b) to join the Course subject to an interview to establish whether they have sufficient proficiency and background to be able to profit from the Course. In certain such instances the Course Co-ordinator may recommend that applicants follow part or all of the relevant preparatory programme.

Preparatory Programme

Applicants admitted under sub-paragraphs (b) and if necessary (c) shall be required to complete a preparatory programme, comprising not less than 30 and not more than 60 credits as directed by the Board, depending on the number of credits already obtained in that area of study, with an overall average mark of 55% or better, prior to their registration as regular students on the Course.

The Board may grant applicants full or partial exemption from the requirement of the preparatory programme if it is satisfied that the applicant possesses post first cycle degree work experience that is relevant to the area of study applied for.

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2014.
