The Department offers full-time postgraduate day courses leading to a Postgraduate Diploma and Master Level, intended for people wishing to study translation or interpreting with two Main Languages (Maltese and English) and one Passive Language (from Italian, French, German and Spanish). For these languages, students will either be native or non-native speakers of Maltese.

The course aims to:
• provide the opportunity for translators and interpreters to learn and develop core translation and liaison/consecutive and simultaneous interpreting skills
• deepen linguistic awareness and understanding of the nature of language in general and of translation (both process and product)
• further enhance competence in both source language and mother tongue, including developing an ability to identify and operate in a variety of language styles and registers
• equip students with the necessary skills for professional employment in the field of translation and interpreting (including familiarity with both technical and specialised registers, editing skills and work experience), remote or video-conferencing interpretation, sub-titling and translation
• equip students with the necessary skills for professional employment in call centres.

The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of:

(a) a Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class Honours or Category II in any subject and
(b) pass an aptitude test and/or an interview which shall be held for the purpose.

Applicants in possession of the Postgraduate Diploma in Translation and Interpreting may be allowed to join Part II of the Course, subject to successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma programme with a minimum average mark of 65%, provided that such applicants shall choose “Interpreting” as their research area of study.

For the purpose of selection, applicants who fully satisfy the general and special course requirements by 31st August preceding the commencement of the course shall be placed in rank order and those for whom places are available will be accepted and informed accordingly.
