| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit offers an introduction to basic grammatical elements of Modern Standard Arabic, starting with the Arabic script. Basic listening, reading unvocalised script, speaking and writing tasks are performed. During this study-unit, the following grammatical items are covered: the equational sentence, nouns and adjectives, personal pronouns, prepositions, the sound and broken plural, noun inflection, the verbal sentence: the perfect tense, the genitive construction, affixed pronouns, adverbs, and trilitteralism. Students are expected to dedicate at least 10 weekly hours of private study, during which they may be assigned language tasks with a view to consolidating the skills acquired in class. Study-unit Aims: 1. To teach students the basics of Arabic script; 2. To teach students elementary notions of Modern Standard Arabic in all the four linguistic competencies (listening, reading, speaking, writing). Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. read unvocalised script and write short sentences in the Arabic script; 2. understand basic instructions, or take part in a basic factual conversation on a predictable topic; 3. understand basic notices, instructions or information. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. master the Arabic script; 2. tackle elementary listening, reading, speaking, and writing tasks in Modern Standard Arabic.
