DESCRIPTION This study-unit is a continuation of the study-units: Proficiency in Arabic 1: Breakthrough, Proficiency in Arabic 2: Breakthrough and Proficiency in Arabic 3: A1.1. It consolidates all language skills learnt till now, as well as introduces new grammatical structures and new vocabulary.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit teaches students how to read and write a short story in the past tense and to expess themselves reasonably accurately, orally and in writing, using a varied repertoire of grammatical structures. Special attention will be given to expressing actions in the past, present and future. The subjunctive mood will also be introduced.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. know and understand the following new grammatical and Lexicon elements:
• Vocabulary: Activities, Adverbs, Verbs;
• Grammar: Present and Imperative Tenses, Regular and Irregular Verbs, the Verbal Sentence.
2. gain confidence in conversation involving immediate needs and situations;
3. gain awareness of Arabic speaking cultures and interact confidently in a number of social situations.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. converse satisfactorily about situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an Arabic-speaking area, e.g. the weather, asking for directions, buying tickets of public transport, ordering food in restaurants, asking for the time/quantities etc.;
2. make oneself understood and communicate about simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information;
3. exchange ideas and information on familiar topics in predictable everyday situations; and
4. interact with reasonable ease in structured situations.
