DESCRIPTION This study-unit is a continuation of 5 study-units (Proficiency in Arabic 1: breakthrough, Proficiency in Arabic 2: Breakthrough, Proficiency in Arabic 3: A1.1, Proficiency in Arabic 4: A1.2, and Proficiency in Arabic 5: A2.1. This study-unit consolidates all skills learnt so far. It is designed to train students to confidently initiate a conversation under pressure in informal and formal Arabic.

The following items are covered: requesting simple information (timetables, costs, facilities, services, etc.), enquiring about and arranging one's agenda, expressing opinions, offering advice within a known area, and asking for information about everyday matters. Moreover, exposure to Media Arabic which started in Proficiency in Arabic 5: A2.1 will be continued in this study-unit. Students are expected to dedicate at least one hour weekly of private study during which they may be assigned language tasks aimed, in particular, at assimilating vocabularies and consolidating the skills acquired in class.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit is designed to prepare students to interact in Arabic-speaking environments. Students will be trained in listening to Arabic formal and informal conversation (e.g. understanding instructions, public announcements, short telephone conversations, general discussions, etc.)

Students will continue to be exposed to Media Arabic and also to notions about Arabic dialects. They are expected to dedicate time to listen regularly to a specific broadcast with a view to familiarizing themselves with Arabic media and culture. Certain sessions of the study-unit will be conducted at the University language lab.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Consolidate and apply the new grammar and vocabulary learnt in Proficiency in Arabic 5: A2.1:
• know and understand vocabulary and phrases used in giving simple reasons, and opinions;
• grammar: Verb Forms, Verbal Nouns, more on Comparatives and Superlatives.
- Understand conversations on general topics;
- Briefly communicate in plain language in structured situations.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Intiate face-to-face conversation and relate effectively with others on a range of different social situations;
- Have an informed awareness of major current affairs and appreciation of cultural values and attitudes within the Arab context.
