| DESCRIPTION | Malta came to form part of the Roman empire in 218 B.C. and remained so until it was absorbed in the Byzantine empire around A.D.535. A historical survey of discoveries and studies from the 16th century to the present are discussed. A study of the literary, epigraphic and archaeological sources of the period relating to Malta in the context of Roman civilization is presented. Lectures will be followed by a field visit. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims at providing students with a survey of life in the Maltese islands in the context of Roman civilization, based on literary, epigraphic and archaeological sources of the period. The survey of discoveries and studies from the 16th century to the present will allow students to understand how the present body of knowledge was achieved. Discussion of specific themes will help students to understand what evidence they can use to discuss topics related to life in Malta in Roman times, such as settlement patterns, economy, political status and religious beliefs. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - recognize how the present body of knowledge on the period was achieved; - identify how the life in Malta unfolded itself in the Roman period, with special reference to specific topics such as settlement patterns, economy, political status and religious beliefs. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - weigh and interpret the evidence provided by ancient written sources; - weigh and interpret the evidence provided by material remains from past excavations and publications; - weigh the above two sources of information to complement each other; - express their acquired knowledge clearly and logically in their assignment and in the essay-type answers to examination questions set at the end of the semester.
