TITLE Synoptic Study-Unit 1: Archaeology

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is meant to prepare final year students for the synoptic examination at the end of their degree programme. The students will be prepared via a series of seminars held at least twice weekly and organized by all the full-time members in Archaeology of the Department and the visiting lecturers who participated in the 3-year teaching programme. The seminars are intended to identify the links between different subjects and fields in three specific areas: Archaeological Method and Theory; Mediterranean Prehistory; Scientific Applications to Archaeology (including Conservation).

Study-unit Aims

1. To verify and test the knowledge of the students after three years of full-time study in Archaeology in the Department of Classics and Archaeology;
2. To prepare students to answer questions in a synoptic fashion;
3. To demonstrate the links that exist between archaeological method and theory with emphasis on the prehistoric period of the Mediterranean;
4. To prepare students to structure their thoughts clearly and write on elaborate topics in a rigorous fashion under examination conditions.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Structure synoptic essays on different but related topics in the correct manner;
2. Draw from relevant case-studies to make a case thereby demonstrating a strong critical awareness on a wide range of subjects;

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Answer a wide range of questions chosen from three main topics synoptically: Archaeological Method and Theory; Mediterranean prehistory; Scientific Applications of Archaeology, including Conservation.
2. Link interrelated topics from a wide temporal and geographical scope;
3. Express eloquently and with critical acumen notions pertaining to the topics studied in the three-year programme.

Main Text/s and any supplementary readings

All the lecturers will draw on the material and readings covered in the three-year programme of studies.
