DESCRIPTION Over the course of history, the sea has provided a means of connecting regions through the movement of people, cultures and ideas. Likewise, the sea has provided the platform on which large-scale and far-flung conflicts were fought. Trade and exchange was also facilitated through maritime routes. Such interactions between humans and the sea have left their mark in a variety of forms, on land as well as underwater. This unit will introduce students to the study of diverse material remains related to human activities linked to the sea.

Emphasis shall also be placed on the context of such material remains and how natural and human processes and actions influence site formation processes. This study-unit is also designed to provide graduate students with theoretical and methodological preparation in maritime archaeology and underwater cultural heritage management. Participating students will be taught how to implement some of the methods needed to conduct projects in the field of maritime archaeology.

Study-Unit Aims:

The primary aim of this study-unit is to provide graduate students with broad exposure to various approaches used in the Mediterranean and around the world for the study, management, interpretation and protection of underwater cultural heritage.

More specific aims of this unit are to:
- introduce students to theory, methods and practices used in the field of maritime archaeology and underwater cultural heritage management;
- provide students with opportunities to learn and apply certain skills required for maritime archaeology and underwater cultural heritage management;
- expose students to a variety of field projects, developed methods and hands-on skills required for the development of a long-term career in maritime archaeology.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- recognise significant aspects directly related to sub-discipline of maritime archaeology as well as to the management, preservation and protection of underwater cultural heritage;
- characterise surveys methods, management strategies and project implementation;
- employ basic skills required for pursuing specialised studies in maritime archaeology.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- conduct multi-disciplinary research;
- gather, systematically analyse and interpret data from a variety of sources;
- scientifically identify areas of archaeological potential in a variety of maritime contexts and landscapes;
- implement standardised models for the study of maritime cultural heritage;
- operate of Sonar Processing Software;
