| DESCRIPTION | This is a basic study-unit on the attractions and skills of History of Art. It introduces Art History as a multi-disciplinary subject and seeks to acquaint the student with the variety of teaching approaches involved. The study-unit introduces methodologies and topics of debate current in the field of Art History. It is divided in two sections. The lectures delivered by Dr Sciberras discuss the analytical techniques used by art historians and surveys the major periods, works, and ideas of Western Art. Students will review individual works of art (discussing their dates, authors, subjects, titles, locations, period, style, etc) and study them in terms of their links with broader issues and ideas. The lectures delivered by Rev. Gauci serve as an Introduction to CHRISTIAN ICONOGRAPHY and GREEK AND ROMAN MYTHOLOGY. This introduces students to the language and development of Christian symbolism with particular attention to the first millennium. Apart from understanding this particular language the student will be introduced to Classical Mythology and its essential role in the history of western art. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: The study-unit is designed to introduce the student to the methodologies and analytical techniques used by art historian; At the end of the study unit the student will be in a position to analyse and discuss works of art within a methodological framework of research and study, understand the complexities of art-historical research, compile catalogue entries for works of art 2. Skills:: By the end of this study unit students will have engaged with the variety of methodologies and topics of debate current in Art History; A Knowledge & Understanding of the general survey of History of Art.
