| DESCRIPTION | The lectures are designed to make the student come to terms with modern art. Several of the art historical movements are considered in the context of coeval experiences and subsequent developments. Fauvism, Cubism, Futurism, Expressionism, Abstract Art are studied and debated within their historical, theoretical and philosophical contexts. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study unit is to bring students in contact with the history of twentieth century modern art. The unit is designed to provide a broad overview of all the art movements which determined and defined modernism. Critical analysis, research oriented discussion and debate is expected. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: The study unit is directed towards a systematic understanding of the evolution and interaction between the various schools of artistic thought and art movements. At the end of the study unit the student will be in a better position to critically analyse the art-historical, philosophical and art-theoretical demands appartaining to the subject. 2. Skills: The lectures give the student the necessary skills to appreciate, evaluate and contextualise the position of the international debate revolving around the history of twentieth century modernism. By the end of the study unit the student will be in a position to appreciate and to deal with modern art works and concepts.
