DESCRIPTION This study-unit discusses the powerful imagery of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio and Annibale Carracci within the multi-faceted contexts of artistic patronage and style. The second part of the study-unit is meant to provide the necessary tools for a critical art historical appreciation of the major pictorial productions of the Early Baroque (1600-1630). It discusses Caravaggio's Late Period and the emergence of Caravaggism, together with the Classicist tendencies manifest in the paintings of the Bolognese artists working in Rome.
