DESCRIPTION The study-unit seeks to discuss the tools and methodology of art historical research with a particular emphasis on researching art and architecture in Malta. The study-unit is primarily aimed for M.A. candidates in History of Art and will be devised to follow the candidates’ specific research for their theses.

The topics for classroom discussion are:
- Research planning
- Originality
- Bibliographic control
- Collecting research
- Sources and references
- Hypothesis and verification
- Archival sources
- Attributions and comparative research
- Condition reports
- Academic writing

A cycle of seminars with active student participation will be held to discuss research in progress.

Study-unit Aims:

- To understand the methodologies involved in art historical research;
- To provide students with the different skills required and methodologies to write the postgraduate dissertation;
- To cultivate a critical understanding of the research process leading to the writing of the postgraduate dissertation;
- To analyze the interconnection between the different stages in their research and writing processes.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Define the main objectives of their research;
- Choose the appropriate methodology for data collection;
- Describe the main approaches taken to carry out the research proposal;
- Distinguish the different stages in the research and writing processes;
- Write their work according to rigorous academic criteria.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Have bibliographic control over their subject;
- Write a comprehensive literature review;
- Plan the stages of research according to a particular schedule;
- Undertake postgraduate research in different contexts by using a variety of methodology;
- Assess critically the main sources of their research.
