| DESCRIPTION | After having followed the two compulsory study-units 'Screenwriting and the Art of Dramaturgy' Part 1 and Part 2, participants will be in possession of a broad overview of how to create an innovative story and to plan its development from the writing of a first draft to its final version. Building on this acquired knowledge, the study-unit 'The Practice of Filmmaking: From the Set to the Screen' will continue to impart to its students the practical aspects of film, which include the structuring, the visualization, and the actual shooting of a short film. The students enrolled in this unit will be divided into two or three groups, each of which will be guided by a tutor in the technical phases of such a process. Two or three screenplays will be selected from the scripts that were submitted at the end of 'Screenwriting and the Art of Dramaturgy. Part 2' and will be turned into a short film with a distinctly Maltese theme. In addition to the guidance of their respective tutors, a Director of Photography will assist the students in the technical and artistic decisions of shooting. Students will also work as part of a team and will be taught to identify roles and responsibilities. Study-unit Aims: - To impart to students a series of visual techniques which are essential tools for screenwriters and filmmakers; - To enhance the student's stylistic knowledge when transforming a screenplay into a short film; - To guide the students from the first steps of writing the first draft of a script, on to rewriting successive drafts, and then on to actually directing the finished work; - To introduce students to the basic concepts in shooting, camera work, audio and visual montage, and colour mixing; - To teach students how to work as part of a team in the shooting process of a short film. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply the essential tools which will enable him or her to transpose a concept developed in a screenplay to the screen; - Apply his acquired knowledge on shooting and camera work in the direction of a short film. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Create eloquent images in his or her visual storytelling through an effective choice of shots; - Create an original story and to plan its visualization and its development into a short film in all the necessary stages.
