| DESCRIPTION | The objective of the study-unit is to acquaint students with some of the determining thematic and formal aspects of early British Romanticism. The study-unit will focus in particular on the concept of Romanticism as it affected European literature in the early nineteenth century. It will examine the nature of the Romantic revolt against neo-Classicism, the impact of Rousseau and the French Revolution, the concept of the ‘natural’ man, the interrelationship of Man and Nature, the ‘unleashing’ of the imagination, and the notion of natural supernaturalism. Reference will be made to the social, political and philosophical milieu of the times.
