| DESCRIPTION | Stylistics is an area of literary and linguistic criticism that in bringing together protocols of textual analysis taken from both language studies and critical practice makes for a very powerful tool in the analysis of style, tone, ambiguity, etc. The study-unit looks at how the theory and practice of stylistics was prefigured in the work of figures like, among others, Roman Jakobson and Jan Mukařovský, and then goes on to consider more recent developments in the field initiated by Geoffrey Leech and Mick Short, among others. The emphasis, however, will be on close reading and analysis of texts, in order to enable students to think and write in a more cogent and informed manner about aspects of style. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims to: - Introduce students to linguistic theoretical frameworks. - Practice the application of theoretical frameworks in the analysis of literary texts. - Introduce the diverse influences from other disciplines. - Generate a critical approach to the state of stylistics. - Expand the practical approach to include the interdisciplinary influences in the analysis of literary texts. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - learn how literary texts work and mean; - learn about the various contexts in which literary texts are produced and read; - demonstrate an understanding of linguistic theory and analysis; - demonstrate an understanding of the changing roles of literariness. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - adopt close reading skills; - link theoretical issues with substantive areas the interface of language and literature; - use a range of analytical skills; - engage in independent critical thought; - engage in textual intervention; - develop a structured systematic approach to a variety of written literary texts; - develop a sustained and persuasive arguments on the basis of evidence; - produce scholarly presentation of material adopting the appropriate style and tone.
