| DESCRIPTION | Modernist fiction is one of the richest periods in English narrative; this study-unit surveys the field and provides a critical introduction to some of the major novels of the era. This study-unit examines aspects of Modernism in the early twentieth-century British novel. It focuses on the notion of innovation and experiment in some of the works of the leading modernists of the period. Topics dealt with will include ‘epiphanic writing’, ‘stream-of-consciousness’ and interior monologue, symbolism, and the preoccupation with myth and history. The set texts are: James Joyce, Dubliners (especially ‘The Dead’), A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man; D.H. Lawrence The Rainbow; Virginia Woolf, To the Lighthouse.
