| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit refers to the practice involved in Applied Linguistics in English Studies 1 and looks at current published research in language studies. It introduces students to studies which have focused on 'real world' problems of English usage, and provides them with the opportunity to identify and analyse errors of usage, and intervene by designing tools and tasks to target these errors. It promotes an interdisciplinary approach to research on language-related concerns in the various fields encompassed by applied linguistics, and focuses on the testing and application of theory. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims to: - provide opportunities for exploring theoretical frameworks applied to diverse linguistic problems in English language usage, as presented by key researchers; - assist students in the application of knowledge acquired through practice in ENG3015 and engage critically with findings of a number of key studies in the field of Applied Linguistics. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - identify key theoretical frameworks; - demonstrate an ability to identify key linguistic features related to fluency, complexity and accuracy in English language usage; - compare and contrast studies by focusing on methodology, task planning and findings. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - adopt close reading skills; - link theoretical frameworks to task practice; - use a range of analytical skills; - engage in independent critical thought; - review and write critically about studies in the field of Applied Linguistics; - identify key problems in English using a learner corpus and design specific tasks to address the problems.
