TITLE Writing Skills for Postgraduate Students in the Humanities

DESCRIPTION The study-unit is designed to address possible problems of English proficiency at postgraduate level; provide language support useful to students' postgraduate studies; improve students’ written fluency and accuracy specific to academic discourse necessary at this level.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to improve students' level of proficiency in English and their ability to pitch their writing to an academic audience, as well as to help them acquire a writing style appropriate for this level.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• Review existing basic knowledge of the structure of English;
• Identify and correct errors in their own writing;
• Review their basic text organisation strategies;
• Summarise and paraphrase scholarly articles;
• Identify diverse conceptual structures;
• Discern characteristics specific to academic discourse;
• Identify relevant referencing styles.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• Edit their own writing;
• Use cohesive devices to link paragraphs/ideas throughout an extended piece of writing;
• Improve summary and paraphrasing skills;
• Demonstrate appropriate conceptual structures;
• Use appropriate referencing styles.

Students will be given a comprehensive study pack at the start of the study-unit.
