DESCRIPTION This unit will deal with the issues of land transport systems, geography and planning. The various aspects related to mobility include a discussion on the Urban Transport Problem, public transport provision, sustainability and the environment, with the externalities associated with hyper-mobility. The study of transport geography helps to explain patterns of urban development and mobility. This study unit highlights the various techniques used in transport research whilst the underlying principles of transport systems, such as modal choice, trip purpose, trip generation and distribution, will show how the transport networks function. Practical sessions are an integral part of this study unit and each student, either individually or in a team will be required to participate in fieldwork.

Study-unit Aims:

The study unit aims to:
- define the concepts of transport, mobility and accessibility,
- define transport systems and functions,
- establish the basic analysis techniques to study transport systems,
- understand the role of geography in transport planning and development.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- describe a transport system,
- define the functions of a transport system within the context of its geography,
- research mobility patterns and behaviour over space.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- analyse a transport system by applying basic network analysis tools,
- examine mobility behaviour through a series of approaches used in transport geography,
- study supply of transport infrastructure and estimate demand through the use of mobility data.
