DESCRIPTION What exactly is culture? What do cultural studies actually deal with? This study-unit is designed to introduce basic questions, methods and concepts of cultural studies as well as topics related to German culture. For this purpose it is important that texts of cultural theory will be read, for instance “What is culture?” by Terry Eagleton. Furthermore, students will be familiarised with important and relevant aspects of the Federal Republic of Germany, Austria and Switzerland (e.g. geography, history, state
structure, constitution and legal system, society, education and science, cultural life). The study-unit aims to, as far as possible, create an objective and non-stereotyped image of the three countries and to allow a comparison with the students’ own personal experience.

Einführung in die Landeskunde und Kulturwissenschaft
Was ist eigentlich Kultur?
