DESCRIPTION | This study-unit provides an introduction to Modern Hebrew. It will deal with the Hebrew alphabet, basic vocabulary, introduction to grammar, basic conversation skills, reading and writing skills, whilst offering students cultural awareness of Israeli culture. In this study-unit, students will be introduced to basic features of orthography, phonology, morphology and the syntax of Modern Hebrew. Moreover, special emphasis will be laid on conversational skills involving life situations, such as conversations with friends, interactions with sales persons in shops and so on and so forth. Study-unit Aims The aims of this study-unit are to: 1) provide a basic knowledge of Modern Hebrew; 2) train students in reading and writing Modern Hebrew; 3) ensure that students are develop the necessary conversational skills for daily real-life situations. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1) have a basic knowledge of Modern Hebrew; 2) gain a knowledge of the alphabet; 3) acquire a vocabulary of 280 words; 4) know how to read and write basic Modern Hebrew and to have basic communication skills; 5) understand aspects of the modern history of Israel through an understanding of its language. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1) interact with a modern language other than their native one; 2) exploit the required communication skills necessary to dialogue with Israeli partners in various spheres of work; 3) learn how to listen and communicate more attentively and effectively with other people.
