DESCRIPTION This study-unit offers an introduction to the grammar of biblical and Jewish Aramaic. Lectures will cover the basic elements of various Aramaic dialects, and students will translate a number of sentences and short passages extracted from the Hebrew Bible, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Targumim, and rabbinic literature.

Study-unit Aims:

- To offer an introduction to the grammar of biblical and Jewish Aramaic;
- To train students to read and translate short texts in Aramaic adapted from the Hebrew Bible, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Targumim, and rabbinic literature.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Identify, describe, and analyze grammatical elements of biblical and Jewish Aramaic;
- Read and translate short texts in Aramaic adapted from the Hebrew Bible, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Targumim, and rabbinic literature.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Integrate their knowledge of Aramaic with their knowledge of biblical Hebrew;
- Compare and contrast different Semitic languages;
- Acquire insights into a new language and a new worldview.
