DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides an introductory view at the history of the Jews and the development of Judaism in Palestine during the Persian Period. Using both archaeological and textual evidence, this study-unit will discuss various topics, such as the overall settlement patterns, as well as very important cultural issues, such as the formation of the Hebrew Bible. The links between Judah and neighbouring areas will be taken into account. This study-unit should be useful to students who are interested in ancient Palestine or to those who want to specialize in historical archaeology.

Study-unit Aims

1. To present an introduction to the history of the Jews and the development of Judaism during the Persian Period.
2. Many topics will be discussed, including the formation of the Hebrew Bible, the settlement patterns in Palestine, and the overall material culture of Judah and the neighbouring peoples.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. have a good background knowledge of various aspects of Judah in the Persian Period and of the neighbouring cultures;
2. have a good background knowledge of the formation of the Hebrew Bible.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

become acquainted with the sources of information concerning the Persian Period and with the methodological issues involved in the application of these sources for our understanding of this period. The student would be able to use the aforementioned methodological skills in other fields of study, such as historical archaeology.
