| DESCRIPTION |
Students will be reading closely select Hebrew texts belonging to the category of Hymns and Prayers. These texts will include problems of textual criticism, and they will be chosen from various collections of hymns and prayers in the Hebrew Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls, such as the Psalms and the Hodayot. Students will also be introduced to the cultural background relative to the chosen texts. In this synoptic study-unit, students will be expected to demonstrate a practical knowledge of Classical Hebrew, Dead Sea Scrolls Hebrew, and Aramaic, which they gained in their course. Moreover, they will be expected to make the necessary connections between the chosen texts and the pertinent cultural background, which they learnt in various study-units on the civilization of Ancient Israel and the Second Temple Period.
Study-unit Aims
1. To help students apply their knowledge of Hebrew to the category of Hymns and Prayers. 2. To ensure that students can read Classical Hebrew texts and the Dead Sea Scrolls even when these include difficult text-critical problems. 3. To provide the cultural background to the selected texts, linking this to the cultural study-units that students followed throughout their course.
Learning Outcomes
1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1. read Hebrew texts that belong to the category of Hymns and Prayers; 2. successfully grapple with very serious problems of textual criticism; 3. demonstrate that they can apply the knowledge of Hebrew, which they gained during their course, to any type of literary genre.
2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1. make a very close critical reading of both ancient and modern texts; 2. understand better the literary culture of the First and Second Temple Periods; 3. appreciate other cultures, both ancient and modern.
