TITLE Synoptic Study-Unit: Wisdom Literature

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL Not Applicable

ECTS CREDITS 6

DEPARTMENT Oriental Studies

DESCRIPTION Students will be reading closely select Hebrew texts belonging to the category of Wisdom Literature. These texts will include problems of textual criticism, and they will be chosen from various collections in the Hebrew Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls, such as Qohelet, Proverbs, and various sapiental texts from Qumran. Students will also be introduced to the cultural background relative to the selected texts. In this synoptic study-unit, students will have to demonstrate a practical knowledge of Classical Hebrew, Dead Sea Scrolls Hebrew, and Aramaic, which they gained in their course. Moreover, they will be expected to make the necessary connections between the chosen texts and the pertinent cultural background, which they learnt in various study-units on the civilization of Ancient Israel and the Second Temple Period.

Study-unit Aims

1. To help students apply their knowledge of Hebrew to the category of Wisdom Literature.
2. To ensure that students can read Classical Hebrew texts, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and Aramaic texts even when these include difficult text-critical problems.
3. To provide the cultural background to the selected texts, linking this to the cultural study-units that students followed throughout their course.
