| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit offers the students the opportunity to reach an understanding of the manner in which the Order of St John conducted the intricacies of its relations with foreign States during its long sojourn in Malta. It will focus on the Order's relations with one State - the Republic of Venice - but, where appropriate, similarities and differences with others - like France, Tuscany, Sardinia, Monaco, etc. - will also be analysed. Though details of the course may vary from year to year, the objective will be pursued by a study of the topics listed below: - Venice's interests in the central Mediterranean in the late Middle Ages (e.g., Venice and Sicily, Venice and the Hafsids) - Traces of Venetian contacts with late Medieval Malta. - Venice and the Order of St John, to 1520. - The Order's Grand Priory of Venice. - Malta's role in Venice's wars with the Turks. - The Maltese corsair and Venice's Stato da Mar. - Why the Venetian sequestro? - Consular relations. - The Huomo della Repubblica in Malta. - The fate of Venetians in Early Modern Malta. - Venice and Malta's quarantine system. - Veneto-Maltese trade relations. - Napoleon, Venice, the Order, and Malta (1795-98). It is not necessary for students taking this unit to have prior knowledge of Venetian history. Reading List: - V.
