DESCRIPTION The study-unit is particularly designed to give a ‘total’ history of Malta under the Hospitallers (1530-1798) within its broader Mediterranean context. It will be taught by lectures and semi¬nars and will introduce students to the archival records of the period. Students will be assigned a fairly specialized topic to be studied in some detail from both secondary and original sources.

Aims:

To survey, and account for, the major changes that Hospitaller Malta experienced from 1530 to 1798.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to understand the meaning of the long-term perspective in the process of historical development and be able to explain the forces at work behind the structural changes that the Order of St John’s presence on Malta brought about in the economic, social, and cultural spheres of everyday life on the island.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to demonstrate an ability to engage critically and independently in historiographical debates on certain issues, like the long-term historical significance of the Ottoman siege of 1565 and the eviction of the Order from Malta in 1798.
