| DESCRIPTION | The primary objective of this study-unit is to review the foreign policies of key European nation states and provide a thorough understanding of their role within European and international affairs. The unit will introduce students to domestic political factors that impact foreign policy decision-making and priorities, and the historical and geopolitical foreign policy traditions that inform contemporary interests and foreign policy choices. The course will undertake a detailed assessment of current issues within the foreign policies of European States, including relations within the EU, bilateral and multilateral relations and partnerships, both within European and beyond, and the security issues and strategic postures of these states. Countries that will be examined include the United Kingdom, Italy, France and Germany. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to give the students a thorough understanding of how key European states conduct foreign policy, how foreign policy is made, what are the key issues, what are the major constraints and what are the ultimate outcomes. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - comprehend the different needs of different players in I.R.; - comprehend how different facets of I.R. contribute towards foreign policy making; - discuss the needs of European states; - describe how history, resources, locality, and regionality impact on foreign policy making. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - evaluate the methods and tools adopted by states on the international circuit; - discuss long term trends and patterns in the foreign policies of these states; - analyse the impact of their foreign policy decisions on regional and international political developments.
