DESCRIPTION The development of literature in Italy from the earliest attempts in verse and prose in the various “volgari” to the masterpieces by Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio. The differences between Medieval literary output in Latin and in the Romance languages are explained against the historical and linguistic background and special attention is given to the lyrical tradition which evolved in Provence and in Northern France, influencing the Sicilian group of poets, the Siculo-Tuscans and the Dolce Stil Novo, including Dante.
