DESCRIPTION The development of poetry and prose writing in the 14th century, with special focus on Petrarca's "Il Canzoniere" and Boccaccio's "Decameron".

The conclusion will treat summarily the rise of Latin Humanism and its development into "l'umanesimo volgare" in the circle of Lorenzo de' Medici.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to provide a deeper knowledge of two of the greatest Italian writers of the 14th century and familiarization with their language, which is the foundation of the literary and standard variety of Italian.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- appreciate the effects of the rhetorical devices which made it an art-form;
- comprehend the social and intellectual background of medieval Italy in its particular as well as its universal aspects.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to read medieval poetry and prose according to its specific criteria.
