DEPARTMENT Italian

DESCRIPTION Although students registering for study-units offered by the Dept of Italian have obtained at least a Grade C at Advanced Level (Matsec), during the first year they usually find it difficult to improve their written competence up to the level expected at university. The first part of this study-unit will expose the students to different linguistic registers and help them to recognize and use them appropriately. During the second part of the study-unit students will produce different samples of written material and will be introduced to creative writing and shown how to plan their own stories. Writing about a familiar topic will help them to be more confident and develop their potential. They will then proceed to write general and literary essays, book reviews and features. These skills will help them write assignments as required throughout their 3-year BA course. Since dissertations comprise an important part of the final year for the Honours degree, special attention will be given to the technique of writing a dissertation, including bibliography, footnotes, and references.
