DESCRIPTION | During this study-unit the current sociolinguistic situation in Italy will be described and analysed. The terminology related to the field will be introduced, with special reference to distinction between langue/parole, language varieties, registers and notions related to contact linguistics. The current architecture of the Italian language, as originally proposed by Berruto (1987), will be presented in detail and particular relevance will be given to the concepts of neo-standard and italiano d’uso medio. Furthermore, other aspects related to language use in minority communities in Italy will be discussed and presented in the light of theories related to bilingualism and multilingualism. A number of language varieties, which are characteristics of contemporary Italian, will be described and analysed during the course. These will include dialects, jargon, sectorial languages and Italian L2. Special relevance will also be given to the language of the media from which practical examples of language development and change will be taken. Emphasis will be placed on the difference between the spoken and written varieties of the language of the Italian media, markedness, domains, speech acts and communicative models. Study-unit Aims - to become knowledgeable in Italian sociolinguistics from a theoretical and functional point of view; - to get acquainted with the notions related to speech acts, language functions and language varieties; - to reflect on the changing dynamics of contemporary Italian language and how these changes are influenced by the language of modern media; - to learn how language change is intrinsically related to vitality, therefore understanding more profoundly issues related to one's own mother tongue and/or second language. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - demonstrate knowledge of the basic theoretical notions of Italian sociolinguistics by being able to describe them and illustrate them in writing; - explain the various areas included in the discipline by being able to define them, comment on them and relate them to other areas of study; - describe features of language varieties of Italian (including regional and sectorial varieties) by identifying them in contemporary texts; - demonstrate that he/she possesses knowledge of contemporary Italian sociolinguistics by providing practical examples of how aspects of this discipline are manifest in the present-day use of the language. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - formulate distinctions between various forms of Italian varieties, including those used in the media, by classifying them according to the criteria illustrated in sociolinguistic models of contemporary Italian; - apply and compare the notions illustrated during this course by classifying Italian language varieties according to how widespread they are and according to their functions, domain, register and/or sectorial use.
