DESCRIPTION This study-unit will be divided into three distinct parts. The first part will be dedicated to a set of selected Italian words and concepts which feature prominently both in the Italian legal dictionary and in the current one thet is still studied and used in Malta.

In the second part of the study-unit, we will examine a wide range of examples of Italian words with a particular focus on a series of legal words used in the "Kollezzjoni Ta Decizjonijiet Tal Qrati Superjuri" which, from 1854 till 1934, have been issued and written in Italian.

In the third part of the study-unit we will be discussing the precise significance of the selected legal words within contemporary cultural context in Italy. We will also examine the development of their meaning over the last fifty years.

The bibliography may include also literary works, television broadcasts and films based on some of the concepts which will be discussed in class.

Study-unit Aims:

• To provide an overview of the key words in the Italian and Maltese latest legal system.
• To define the weight of the concepts studied in the Italian culture of the twentieth and twenty-first Century history.
• To give an indication on the use of selected legal words in the Italian culture.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will:
• Be able to understand the meaning of the selected words.
• Be able to critically appraise the evolution of their meaning through the last fifty or sixty years.
• Be able to discuss those words and concepts in class.
• Have an in-depth knowledge of the use of those words in the contemporary Italian culture.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
• Understand the Italian lexicon of justice in Malta.
• Enhance their skills in law via an understanding of the key concepts and the selected legal terminology.
• Develop the skills which are necessary for the understanding of the Italian legal texts construction of legal texts.
• Critically appraise the contemporary meanings of the selected words and the essential features of their etymology.
