DESCRIPTION Since this study-unit is the first part of a course in Classical Hebrew, the basic building blocks of this language will be taught, and these include the following: the Hebrew alphabet, the morphology of Classical Hebrew, elementary syntactical aspects of this language, and vocabulary. This is a practical course in Classical Hebrew, and therefore many translation exercises will be done

Study-unit Aims

1. To teach students the alphabet using the Hebrew “Square Script”.
2. To learn the vocalic system of Classical Hebrew as transmitted by the Massoretes.
3. To explain the various types of nouns (both in the absolute and construct state).
4. To guide students in learning vocabulary.
5. To explain the Hebrew verbal system.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Write simple sentences in Classical Hebrew using the “Square Script”;
2. Read moderately long sentences in Classical Hebrew and translate them into English;
3. Understand the word order in Classical Hebrew.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Read texts (even those in English) much more attentively;
2. Appreciate other languages;
3. Have an eye to detail.
