| DESCRIPTION | In this study-unit students will read select passages in Hebrewse from various pesharim found among the Dead Sea Scrolls such as the Pesher Habakkuk (1QpHab). This will give students the opportunity to get familiar with the Hebrew of the Dead Sea Scrolls, which is a late strand of Classical Hebrew that contains some variant morphological and grammatical features. Students will also be exposed to a literary genre which is not found in the Hebrew Bible, and to the type of language that is characteristic of this genre:; moreover, they will have the opportunity to focus in detail on the structural and literary complexity of these two documents, and to experience firsthand some of the methods of biblical interpretation employed by the community responsible for these manuscripts. Since the Hebrew of the Dead Sea Scrolls is unvocalised, students will also be trained to decipher, vocalise, and read unpointed Hebrew text, a most effective excercise that will help students master their Hebrew grammar. A background to the Dead Sea Scrolls and to their cultural and historical context will also be given.
