DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides an introductory look at the history of the Jews and the development of Judaism during the Second Temple Period, with a focus on the 2nd century BCE and the 1st centuries BCE and CE. Topics that will be tackled include: the social structure of Palestine during this period; Jewish lifestyle, traditions, and customs; Jewish practices and beliefs; Jewish religious and secular literature; and the relations of Jews with neighbouring cultures. The evidence which will be presented and discussed throughout this study-unit comprises both archaeological and textual evidence, and thus, from a methodological point of view, this unit should be particularly useful for students who want to specialise in historical archaeology.
