Study-Unit Description

CODE PHI1009

TITLE Augustine of Hippo's Philosophy

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 2

DEPARTMENT Philosophy

DESCRIPTION The unit will discuss and clarify Augustine of Hippo should also be regarded as a Christian Philosopher rather than exclusively (or mainly) as a Christian theologian. He himself would certainly not have agreed with the distinction; a distinction - which, after all, in the fifth century CE, neither Augustine himself, nor any other philosopher worth of the title, would have made. Augustine’s formulation of a Christian Philosophy will then be considered from the point of view of a process of assimilation and appropriation of ancient philosophies, made up of tenets taken, more often than not, from Platonism and Neoplatonism. Alongside an original interpretation of the Christian Scriptures and Christian beliefs and traditions, Augustine succeeded in producing a novel formulation and interpretation of Christian philosophy.
