TITLE Philosophy of Religion

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is intended to introduce students to the philosophy of religion. It commences by taking a historical view of philosophical theology by way of a detailed examination of different kinds of arguments for the existence of God. It then introduces students to the shift towards philosophy of religion through the work of Spinoza and Kant and proceeds to evaluate both continental and analytic contemporary work on the philosophy of religion. The specific question of the viability of analogy is asked and a contemporary overview of theistic conception of God is presented.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to introduce students to the fundamental discussions in the philosophy of religion.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Analyze the different proofs for the existence of God;
- Theorise on the possibility of speaking of God and on different ways of doing so;
- Theorise the views on religion and on God articulated by Augustine, Aquinas, Spinoza, Kant and Hume.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Explain and evaluate the role of arguments attempting to prove the existence of God;
- Critique various philosophical positions on religion.
