| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit discusses the development of Islamic thought from its origins in religious discourse through its encounter and interaction with Greek and Persian cultures. It also covers the main currents of Medieval Islamic philosophy and its influence on Western Scholasticism. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to aid the student to explore the rich diversity of Islamic thought and especially its theological and philosophical aspects.t Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a. become familiar with the multi-faceted nature of Islamic thought; b. acquire a better understanding of the way in which theological and philosophical thought are interwoven in classical Islamic discourse; c. acquire a better understanding of the fundamental teachings of Islamic thinkers and their influence on the Scholastic tradition in Medieval Christendom. 2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a. engage in a constructive discussion on the classical Islamic world and its legacy in Western thought; b. connect the various themes in Islamic theology and philosophy with those of Western Scholasticism.
