DESCRIPTION | The Philosophy of Nietzsche Content: This study-unit will offer a study of Nietzsche's views on philosophy, examining his critical writings on language, truth, knowledge and morality together with his affirmative writings on The Overman and the Eternal Recurrence. Reading List - Schacht, R., Nietzsche, Routledge, London, 1983 The Philosophy of Martin Heidegger Content: This study-unit will investigate Heidegger's attempt to weave together the best of phenomenology, existentialism, Kantian transcendental philosophy and hermeneutics into a comprehensive account of human life and its place in being. Heidegger's picture of human life is one in which a fundamental "familiarity with the world" is more basic than our cognitive relationship to objects. Hence, we will spend about two-thirds or so of the semester studying Heidegger's development of this vision, and then turn to his more existentialist side, wherein he examines the nature and implications of death, guilt, anxiety, "nullity," and resoluteness or authenticity. Assessment will be based on regular attendance and participation. Students will be expected to present a seminar presentation for discussion in class, followed by a fuller and tidied version of the paper, at the end of the course, for final assessment. Reading List - Heidegger, M., Being and Time |
