| DESCRIPTION | Central to the understanding of sport this study-unit explores how its meanings are constructed, and how representation and interpretation are subject to negotiation and contest. The study-unit is designed to introduce students to Contemporary Sports Responsibilities, which have become increasingly significant in terms of sociological research, as they include various social aspects from everyday life. Study-unit Aims: The objective of the study-unit is to provide students with a theoretical background to understand principles and aspects of sport involving social class and differences, sex, age, social position, geographical location and political attitudes.The study-unit aims at exploring sport as a means of individual and collective self-expression focusing on social identities that give physical expression social value. Finally the study-unit also aims at looking at the sociological perspective of globalization; the creation of global sporting competitions, the development of information technology and the growth of a sporting goods market. Thus the political economy of sports through the commercialisation of sport and sport becoming subject to the market forces. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Analyze from a sociological perspective the responsibilities of contemporary sports in terms of globalization, gender, media, health, education, deviance, commercialisation and racism; - Understand the relationship between the media and sport; - Systematically understand the main interlinkages that exist between sport,sexual identity and sexual orientation; - Understand notions or racism and ethnicity in sports; - Explore the global entity of sport as a possible diversion of the concept of education. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Explain the main features that characterise sport dynamics with improved political and economic analytical tools; - Theorize on Contemporary Sports and its emergence; - Identify and critically evaluate the positions of the various societies the debate of sport.
