| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit looks at the following main topics: - The physical framework - Pre and early history - Roman Spain - The Visigothic period - Muslim Spain - The Reconquista - The creation of national unity: the Catholic Kings - The period of Spanish hegemony: Charles V and Philip II - The 17th and 18th centuries - The morass of the 19th century - Contemporary Spain. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Comprehensively understand Spanish history from the Middle Ages to present times; - Understand introductory principles relating to historiography; - Assess the legacy of some of the most influential figures in Spanish history, such as, Isabel I, Charles V, Cánovas, Franco, Felipe González, J. M. Aznar, Juan Carlos I and Felipe VI; - Understand present-day Spanish society as the result of historical developments in the Modern Age. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Critically think about and analyse some of the most contentious moments of Spanish History including the loss of empire (1898), the Civil War (1936) and the Transition (1975); - Bring together, organise and present essential information from written sources in a structured manner; - Acquire skills in historical explanation, causation and argumentation.
