| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit focuses on skills, attitudes, and resources necessary when dealing with translation for specific purposes. Languages for special purposes are used in today's world to describe different areas of specialised knowledge, and the course is designed to provide translation practice in specific areas. Working with specialized languages requires resources and techniques different from those used when investigating general language. The unit will focus on three main areas of specialized language, namely law, science (including technology) and finance (including economics and trade). Study-unit Aims: - To familiarize students with the challenges of translating documents in the broad fields of law, science and finance; - To provide translation practice and feedback in order for students to develop the adequate skills in text analysis, research, terminology use and stylistic rendering related to the fields concerned.for specific purposes relating to the legal, scientific, and financial fields; - To assist students in exploring the potential of specialized corpora as a translation resource. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Distinguish between texts using language for specific purposes; - Use the appropriate linguistic and stylistic elements in specialised translation (i.e. choose between synonyms, determine appropriate style, and verify conceptual information); - Provide adequate translations of specialized texts in the fields concerned. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Determine the appropriate translating strategies related to specialized texts; - Apply the appropriate translation skills in technical translation; - Identify and use the appropriate resources for the translation of specialized texts.
